Keep your Gums and Teeth in Optimum Condition

Periodontal Treatment

Everyone is susceptible to periodontal, or gum, disease, as everyone's mouth carries bacteria that cause plaque to build. Gum disease is an extremely common problem among adults, and while it is treatable, it is also preventable with good oral hygiene habits. Treating periodontal disease as early as possible once diagnosed is critical, as leaving it untreated could lead to more serious oral health issues, including tooth loss.

At Cosmetic Dentistry of New Mexico, Dr. Byron W. Wall is experienced in administering periodontal treatment for his Albuquerque-area patients. If you have symptoms of gum disease, or if we discover evidence of gum disease during a routine checkup, we are well-equipped to provide the appropriate care. To learn more about periodontal treatment, contact our Albuquerque dental practice today.

Types of Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease that is caused by poor dental hygiene, can be reversed by regularly brushing and flossing, in addition to seeing Dr. Wall for regular checkups and cleanings.

Periodontitis is a serious problem that occurs when gingivitis is left untreated, in which plaque spreads to below the gum line. Toxins, developed from plaque buildup, can irritate the gums and further damage the bones and other tissues supporting the teeth.

Patients that manage to discover periodontal disease early enough will find various treatment options available. We strongly encourage patients to seek proper care as soon as possible, as the disease could have permanent damaging effects to the mouth. The dental professionals of our Albuquerque practice are experienced and highly skilled in periodontal treatment, which may include:

Scaling and rooting is a common practice employed by Dr. Wall for removing the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Scaling involves scraping tartar from around the gum line; and rooting is then the process of removing rough spots on the root of the tooth where germs exist.

Medication may be administered in conjunction with scaling and rooting, for the purpose of controlling the bacteria in the mouth and/or minimizing the size of periodontal pockets. Additionally, enzyme suppressants or oral antibiotics may be given. The type of medication supplied will depend on the extent of the case.

Surgical treatment may be required if deep cleaning and medication do not eliminate deep pockets, or if inflammation persists. During the procedure, the gums will be lifted by Dr. Wall; tartar will be removed; and the gums will then be sutured back in place.

If periodontal disease results in tooth or bone loss, Dr. Wall can perform cosmetic dentistry procedures to restore your smile.
