TMJ Treatment
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder is a painful condition that causes inflammation around the jaw joints.
Left untreated, TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) can lead to serious dental issues, including erosion, mobility, and even tooth loss.
At Cosmetic Dentistry of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, Dr. Byron W. Wall provides advanced treatment for TMJ disorders.
TMJ treatment can eliminate painful symptoms and help patients improve their overall quality of life...
Benefits of TMD Treatment
Alleviate Pain
TMD not only causes pain in the jaw joints. It can also lead to chronic headaches, neck and back pain, and earaches. With proper treatment, patients often find that their whole body health improves.
Reduce Risk of Dental Damage
Temporomandibular joint disorders are linked to bruxism – or, chronic teeth grinding and clenching. Each condition can exacerbate the other, creating a vicious, painful cycle.
Improve Chewing Function
Left untreated, TMJ disorder can cause significant discomfort when eating. For many individuals, the pain becomes so severe that they eat a limited diet, which could lead to malnutrition.
Reduce or Eliminate Tinnitus
TMD not only causes earaches, but it can also lead to tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. Though tinnitus does not develop in every case, proper treatment can reduce or eliminate this chronic problem.
Enhance Overall Health
TMJ disorder has been linked to a number of systemic medical conditions, including fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, and chronic fatigue. The correct treatment can have a positive impact on your health and overall wellness.

"We Have Found Our New Dentist"
My husband had an appointment yesterday for what we believed would be needing a crown. After review, and safely handling the process, it was determined that he needed a filling only. The procedure was handled in office, same day, safely, considerately and promptly. The office etiquette and customer service was outstanding. Very knowledgeable from the initial phone call to the completion of service. We have found our new Dentist and Dentist office. Hooray!
I’ve been going here for about 15 years. Prior to that I had a pretty traumatic experience. I recommend Dr. Wall and Cosmetic Dentistry of New Mexico to anyone that mentions dental work in my presence. At this place you’ll learn that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be such an anxiety producing event. Give them a try! The rest of the staff is awesome too!
What Causes TMJ Disorder?
There are many reasons why TMJ dysfunction may occur. For example:
- Misaligned teeth or jaws that put pressure or strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles
- The articular disk that cushions the jaw joints erodes or becomes misaligned
- The cartilage around the joints is damaged by arthritis
- The jaw has been damaged by some type of trauma

There are several risk factors that can increase the risk of developing TMD...
There are several symptoms and warning signs that could indicate that you have TMD...
Diagnosing TMJ Dysfunction
A Comprehensive Exam
Dr. Wall will perform a visual assessment of your teeth, gums, and temporomandibular joints. He will also palpate the area around the jaw and feel for abnormalities when you open and close your mouth. X-rays and scans are also taken to determine the extent of the problem.
Treatment Recommendations
Dr. Wall will talk with you about your symptoms so he can better understand your condition. Once the examination is complete, he will make treatment recommendations based on the severity of your TMJ dysfunction. In most cases, we start with conservative treatment options.
Nonsurgical TMJ Treatments

Oral Splint
An oral splint separates the teeth and keeps the jaw in a more favorable position. Dr. Wall can create a custom oral splint at our Albuquerque, NM, office. For many patients, this approach is successful in treating disorders of the temporomandibular joint. Splints may also be combined with other treatments.
